I feel fairly certain that Autumn is coming early this year. The walnuts have been falling for weeks now, maybe over a month. I don't really remember them doing that before. Driving over through Rich Valley yesterday, there were many different kinds of trees changing, so what we saw by the Mount Rogers school isn't isolated.  Things are moving swiftly away from Summer and I feel glad for it.

It's been a hard, hard week here. Mike lost his job yesterday. A few days before, we had no idea such a thing would happen, but it did. It was supposed to be short term when he took it six years ago, but jobs are honestly hard to come by around here.  So, we've been sorting through a lot of things, mentally and physically. Forms to complete, numbers to call, a pile of uniforms that will never be worn again. It feels so strange. We've been here before, this rock bottom place.

It makes me so glad for all the big bills we paid in the Spring and all that maple syrup we bought.  I had stockpiled a number of things, including birthday and Christmas gifts.  Despite the preparations and skills we have, it will still be very, very tight for the foreseeable future.  We have a few more passengers this time around than we did six years ago, but we have experience, too.  This will pass.

A Blessed Wilderness

It was just like being in heaven, being in there. In those days there was no road. The park was all a blessed wilderness. I have often thought what a wonderful people we would have been if we had wanted to keep it that way.
