Copper Rods

I had a few hours to myself yesterday where I just sat on the couch and watched the Enki first grade DVDs.  How thankful I am for those!  Seeing things that I had read about presented by real children made it feel more real and more doable.  Watching poem recitations with eurhythmy-style movements really made them come alive.  Hearing the daily, weekly and monthly schedules again helped so much, too. Still, it will be up to me to pick everything out and fit it together.

Supplies are starting to sift in--new, unbroken stick crayons should arrive today.  Mike got the supplies for our copper rodes yesterday.  While copper is pricey, it was still around a third of the price of buying them premade.  I've ordered the main lesson books and have picked up a few folders and a binder at Wal-Mart.  Recorders and cuisenaire rods remain the last purchases, but we have a gift card to cover some of that, thankfully.

There will be a lot about first grade that will be new and treasured, a lot of supplies and activities that will require reverence and respect for the materials.  I can see that Willow is really ready to take on these new things.  This summer has been a challenging one, outside influences shifting our inner world in ways we haven't dealt with before and that ever-present adventurous toddler.  Our world traveler, Laurel might end up being!

August is fading fast on me, nearly half over, and there is still so much I need to get done before we begin September.  I suppose it's time for a pot of Cream of Wheat on this cool morning to start us on the work of the day.

A Blessed Wilderness

It was just like being in heaven, being in there. In those days there was no road. The park was all a blessed wilderness. I have often thought what a wonderful people we would have been if we had wanted to keep it that way.
