Starting and Ending with Candles

This was probably one of the quietest birthdays we've had in some time.  Laurel's first birthday passed uneventfully, but most other days leave me, at least, feeling quite harried.  The children went to the dentist in the morning, but the rest of the day was spent inside, away from the cold and rain.

We do presents before breakfast, no sense in waiting all day, I think.
I set up the ring the night before, so it was all ready.

Four and a Half

Roan was awake first, and he was very excited to see half-birthday things for him.
He was so pleased, he forgot to carry Willow's hot chocolate to her.
I think that's a good thing.

Paper Dolls

There she is!  So newly seven.

Blowing Out the Candles

Her candles are enough now that they make a lot of light.

Here's Willow's paper doll.
Roan really took charge in cutting his out.
I was concerned he was too young for them, but it has gone well.

Pumpkin High!

In the evening, we enjoyed Willow's favorite supper and pie.
She had two slices with lots of whipped cream.

Day's End

There were a few low moments in the day, but it was a nice one. And, I'll admit, I love that birthdays are generally private family affairs.  We often have guests around the big day for most everybody and they really lack the magic of the actual day.  Becky joined us for supper (and to see the paper bunny that came with the dolls), but one guest is a good number for a birthday.

Willow is ready to get back to our school routine today.  She was excited before bed.  Me, too.  We draw pictures from Briar Rose today--thirteen fairies!

Happy 7th Birthday to your little girl! It looks like such a sweet birthday. We like our birthdays quiet and simple family affairs, too - and also generally do gifts in the morning! - Stacey

Happy Birthday Willow!

(And I've seen your recent entries but been away from home a few days... too tired even for <3's.)

Aw, sweet girl. She looks so pleased. It sounds like a lovely day!

We have a party around the birthday, but I like the birthday day itself to be a family thing, to do nice family things.

Thank you! Yes, I think the birthday is really a family anniversary, the day that things changed and someone new was welcomed.

What warm, inviting photos. I think actual birthdays should definitely be more quiet. Extended family parties are great, but exhausting. :)

They are. I have really come to love our routine and stepping out of it wears me out. ;-)

A Blessed Wilderness

It was just like being in heaven, being in there. In those days there was no road. The park was all a blessed wilderness. I have often thought what a wonderful people we would have been if we had wanted to keep it that way.
