A Cold Snap

Frost on the WindowIt's been cold this weekend, really cold, but the temperature is already on its way up.  It bottomed out at one degree this morning and is already up to ten now.  The snow was lots of fun for the children and I encouraged them (and myself) to make the most of it.  Laurel really loves sledding this year and is happy to pull her saucer sled up the hill and go again and again.  Willow has a big collection of ice chunks on the front porch from the plows.  Roan has been shoveling everything.  The snow was too powdery for a snow lantern, but we've gotten a lot of mileage out of it.

For the forseeable future, it's going to be above average out there, not even freezing at night.  I'm trying to make the most of that, too, telling myself that heating costs will be lower.  We'll be able to be outside with greater ease and fewer layers.  We can pick up the trash that's blown into the Roland Estate's grounds.  We'll have more options for nature school.  Maybe we'll hang some laundry outside a time or two.  All that kind of thing.  I guess it means an earlier run of maple sap.  I'm hoping it's not going to wake up the plants too early.  I am such a worrier.

Well, it's still cold today (and I am still in love with this Christmasy window star).  The frost on the windows may melt in the mid-day sun.  I think it will be a good morning to enjoy the warmth of the house and the new lesson books we have.  I'll do a school update soon!

Did you go sleighing too? I did last year when the kids and I were in Finland and I screamed with glee 🙄

I did! Sledding in Finland sounds even more fun!

Hi Brandy,
It has been terribly cold here too- though we have virtually no snow which makes it even worse! Hoping for some snow soon!

I hope some flakes blow your way soon!

Oh, sledding. I have such fond memories of it as a kid, and am sad my kids may never experience it!

Oh, I hope they get the chance!

A Blessed Wilderness

It was just like being in heaven, being in there. In those days there was no road. The park was all a blessed wilderness. I have often thought what a wonderful people we would have been if we had wanted to keep it that way.
