Up the Misty Mountain

Up the misty mountain,
Down the valley low,
March the merry mountain men,
Ho! Ho! Ho!
We'll cut the magic crystals,
We'll set the stars aglow,
We'll turn them into snowflakes,
And make it snow, snow, snow.

~Transcribed from this circle time

We went to check the maple taps yesterday.  They're there all year round, but the sap doesn't flow all that time.  Roan recited the whole process to me with great enthusiasm.

Roots that Grow Up

It was warmish and cloudy at home and, sure enough, it was fifteen degrees cooler at Elk Garden.  I found a little birch tree whose roots were growing up over an old rotted stump.

Tapped Trees

Willow ran way off into the woods to climb big rocks.  She found some that were a perfect restaurant and snow fort.  She climbed and climbed and asked to go back again before bed last night.

Dripping Sap

We found one tube that was dripping.  I took a little taste and it was sweet, though it had a long way to go before becoming maple syrup.

More Climbing

It will be two months before it looks truly Springy up there and that's okay with me.  Suddenly, I feel the need to ask time to slow down a little.

How fun! So glad you got to get out and enjoy some mountain air.

Yes, it was so nice. The best day to do it, too, since we've returned to more seasonable weather.

A Blessed Wilderness

It was just like being in heaven, being in there. In those days there was no road. The park was all a blessed wilderness. I have often thought what a wonderful people we would have been if we had wanted to keep it that way.
