Digging Holes

Digging Holes

Cobbler, cobbler, mend my shoe.
I’ve been shoveling all day through.
Tomorrow I must shovel again.
Can you fix them? Tell me when?

Cobbler took the shoes in hand
And tapped them hard
Upon the sand.
Put the shoes right on his feet
And set to work so quick and neat.

Tap on one shoe, hold it right.
Tap the other, nail it tight.
Shoe to shoe
He did his tricks
Mending shoes to get them fixed.

Tap, tap, tap the cobbler mended.
Tapping, tapping till the night had ended.
Off he took the little shoes
And gave them back as good as new.

A Blessed Wilderness

It was just like being in heaven, being in there. In those days there was no road. The park was all a blessed wilderness. I have often thought what a wonderful people we would have been if we had wanted to keep it that way.

~Adolph Murie, biologist, on Denali
