Pie in the Sky (No Bad Weather)

We celebrated Country Flag Day on Whitetop, as is our way.

Blueberry Pie 1

I made the huckleberry pie from The Little House Cookbook.

Blueberry Pie 2

I also used the "common family paste" recipe.

Blueberry Pie 3

We packed it up for a fried chicken dinner on the mountain.

Rain and Fog

The drought that had plagued May and June is over,
so it was rain and fog all the way there and while we ate.

Chicken and Pie

That's gas station fried chicken, but it was so good!
We had a lot of leftovers, so we kept it warm and shared with some thru-hikers.
They were thrilled, especially when I mentioned pie.

Fog Run

The rain eased up, so we let the children run around.
It was after 8:00 by this time.
Laurel met the puddles and made me realize that I didn't have the rain pants.
On the back she went, to keep warm.

Little Friend

Willow made friends.

Family Portrait

She also staged a family portrait.
Our families have been updated to include
a Mushroom Laurel and a Halloween Willow.

Blueberry Smile

Roan had pie on his face as he enjoyed the little puddles on a big rock.
We named some Silver Lake and Plum Creek and one was an alligator swamp.

The Fog Lifts

This was right before we left to come home.  Whitetop has numerous weather, radio and television towers near it summit, so many photos have power lines in them.  It is a beautiful place, no less, very similar to the mountain everyone gets mixed up on in Blueberries for Sal. There are some blueberries, but it's mainly thornless blackberries, hawthorns and mountain ash (Roan's rowan tree).

On the way home, we saw fireworks as we drove. It was 9:30 when we got home, so we went to bed pretty quickly and the children were quite tired. I look forward to an earlier bedtime this evening.

Sounds like a lovely time! I've been more offline than on lately - I look forward to catching up here. Would you believe I just got the Little House Cookbook from the library today? That huckleberry pie looks so good! And I love the family portrait. (this is Stacey from In the Ozark Hills)

so the best fried chicken we ever had was from a local grocery store's deli department. I would love to try that one in the picture! What a beautiful place. You have inspired me to picnic more often.

A Blessed Wilderness

It was just like being in heaven, being in there. In those days there was no road. The park was all a blessed wilderness. I have often thought what a wonderful people we would have been if we had wanted to keep it that way.
