Summer, Goodbye

Summer goodbye

Autumn is a merry fellow,
Wearing russet clothes.
When his cloak of red and yellow
On the ground he throws,
All the fruits grow ripe and mellow;
Every empty barn o'er flows
With the grain the farmer garners,
As through the fields he goes.

~Enki Grade One

The last day of Summer was a mixed bag, warm in spots and rainy in others.  That's the way it should be, I suppose.  We watched a new roof go on across the street and the men worked until the last light was fading.  I took the children to the orchard for apples, sweet potatoes, chestnuts, and little gourds.  We found cool weather along the way and it was downright cold inside the big building where they store the produce.

Mike took them to Hurricane Campground to run off their energy in a big field while I enjoyed a respite here (which means that I decluttered, tidied, and made ready).  I've got another big pile for the thrift store today, so I'll schedule an early-morning pickup tomorrow.  One of our neighbors is so kind as to pick up things that I don't really want to unload in front of questioning eyes.

Today, we'll build a fire in the late-day sun and enjoy some soup and rolls.  We'll roast chestnuts on the fire and some marshmallows, too.  The children don't know about those, yet.  Happy Fall!

This place offers hayrides every weekend to go out and choose them. :-) Seems people have switched to pumpkins from cabbage around here and there are fields and fields of them.

A Blessed Wilderness

It was just like being in heaven, being in there. In those days there was no road. The park was all a blessed wilderness. I have often thought what a wonderful people we would have been if we had wanted to keep it that way.
