Two Candles on Her Cake

I think Laurel Mae had the nicest second birthday.  I've gone back and compared notes and it's official.  Third (or later) children are often left by the wayside, I think.  The house is already full of toys, we've already had a little girl before, people get busy and lose steam.  But!  She has her own live-in fan club who is very excited by her new status as "two."  Give her a cake and some candles and she is all set.

We spent the morning hiking in the driving winds and rain.  While it was challenging to lug an umbrella everywhere over roots and sticks (she insisted), I think she had a marvellous time with the adversity.  Maybe that will be her strong suit for her sometimes firey personality--persistance to swim upstream.  Arriving home wet and chilled, Laurel received guests!  Carrie brought "bider" for her to drink, apple cider.  Becky brought her cheese cubes (her personal favorite) and a sweet shirt.  I'll get a picture of it some time soon.  We settled into lunch of bean and rice burritos and then, the cake!

Birthday Girl

I have been drawn to angels for Laurel, for some reason, so that is her ornament.
When you are only two, you get to enjoy everyone else's, too.
She really loved the little red bear.

Blowing Out the Candles

We love her face when she blows out candles.

Two Candles on Her Cake

A simple boxed funfetti cake with chocolate frosting was just what we all needed.

Sitting On the Table

She is our chronic table sitter, but we made a concession for her birthday.

Mike took the children to Emory & Henry for the afternoon while I cleaned the basement.  That is how I like to celebrate.  With this many people in a little house, it can feel like it is closing in on you at times, but there are no plans to move.  While they were gone, I also started the apple cake from The Apple Cake and I will share that recipe soon.  Mike says it is the best new thing I have made in a long time.  We're having it for breakfast this frosty morning.

Thank you all for your kind words.  I think today is already dawning a little brighter for me.  I have plans to sew some birthday pajamas and get to the woods again.

That sounds like the perfect birthday for her!

Sweet girl. I'm keeping you in my thoughts. Maybe we can dig up some free time and chat soon?

A Blessed Wilderness

It was just like being in heaven, being in there. In those days there was no road. The park was all a blessed wilderness. I have often thought what a wonderful people we would have been if we had wanted to keep it that way.
